Energy Efficiency For Your Building: 4 Strategic Approaches

PARTAGER

When it comes to building energy efficiency, the quality of the maintenance of your HVAC equipment has a major impact on your profitability. So don’t neglect to perform regular maintenance. Check the operation of your temperature sensors. Clean the coils in your systems. Perform the maintenance recommended by your equipment manufacturer.   To avoid a significant waste of energy, don’t switch on the heating and air conditioning at the same time. Gradually adjust the set point when occupants arrive (21°C in winter and 24°C in summer). Target heat loss reduction with airtight garage doors and high-performance insulation of ventilation ducts and piping. Are you thinking bigger? Other measures, funded in part by the Government of Québec, will allow you to reduce the cost of investment.

Regulation and control systems

A high-performance control system is an integral part of any energy efficiency strategy for buildings. It allows a significant reduction in annual consumption and leads to very interesting savings. By maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature while avoiding overheating or excessive cooling, you reduce your carbon footprint and make your investment profitable. Centralized control of these systems using a control software will result in significant savings:

  1. Boiler control
  2. Thermostatic radiator valves
  3. Internal room thermostat
  4. External temperature sensors

For ventilation that is fully adapted to your needs as well as additional savings on heating and cooling, plan to install a CO2 sensor in the air ducts. This will allow you, among other things, to control the supply of fresh air according to the traffic in your building. Among the energy-saving strategies, adding a thyristor regulator or a triac relay will allow you to avoid overheating. A free-cooling cycle will allow you to take advantage of outdoor conditions to cool your building using outside air.  Reducing the heating temperature by just 1°C can save you up to 8% on your energy bill!

Heating and air conditioning systems

Heating and cooling systems are voracious, to say the least, producing their share of greenhouse gases and increasing the energy bills of businesses. Optimizing your equipment is therefore a critical step and a necessary investment in the progress towards sustainable energy efficiency in your building.  Achieve successful results with these heating and cooling processes:

  1. Heating by geothermal or aerothermal energy
  2. Air conditioning by variable refrigerant flow system
  3. Installing a chiller equipped with a variable speed compressor

Heat recovery system

Heat recovery is another essential avenue for reducing energy bills. These systems can allow you to limit your building’s energy losses considerably:

  1. Plate heat exchanger: thermal efficiency up to 60%
  2. System with water-glycol mixture: thermal efficiency up to 40%
  3. Cassette regeneration heat exchanger: thermal efficiency up to 85%

Solar Technologies

As a renewable energy source, the sun’s radiation could satisfy well beyond global energy consumption.  We must take advantage of it!

  1. Solar panels: This solar water heater preheats, by radiation, the water circulating in the pipes of the panels, reducing your energy consumption costs for your domestic water.
  2. Preheating by solar wall or solar collector: These systems allow you to meet, at a low cost, part of the fresh air heating load in your building.
