What is a cooling tower?
A cooling tower is a heat exchanger in which air and water come into contact with each other in order to cool the water. Cooling towers use different ways to pass water or air through them, including crossflow cooling and counterflow cooling.
In addition, depending on your needs, there are closed-circuit and open-circuit cooling towers, atmospheric cooling towers and mechanical draft cooling towers.
Cooling tower cost and energy efficiency management
A poorly maintained cooling tower will produce warmer cooling water, which will increase the condenser’s pressure. This will impact the systems and energy efficiency—all while increasing operational costs. For every 1 degree increase in temperature, the cooling tower uses 2.5% to 3.5% more energy.
EXAMPLE: If a 100-ton cooling tower costs $20 000 in energy per year, additional costs of between $500 and $700 per year will be added for each one-degree increase in temperature. With an increase of between 5 and 10˚F, you will notice $2500 to $7000 added to your electricity bill.
